History
The journey of HOPE Clinic began in 1996 with the formation of the Asian American Health Coalition (AAHC) of Greater Houston to address the health needs of Houston's diverse AAPI community. After receiving 501(c)(3) status in October 2001, AAHC formed HOPE Clinic to create a health safety net for vulnerable needy individuals.
In 2002, AAHC partnered with the Chinese Baptist Church and the Chinese Community Center, HOPE Clinic opened its door to a once-a-month, four-hour volunteer-run clinic to meet the dire primary health needs of southwest Houston. From 2002 to 2005, HOPE Clinic expanded significantly, hiring key personnel, and securing its first grant from Aetna. During Hurricane Katrina and Rita, the clinic provided essential services to over 3,000 evacuees at Hong Kong City Mall.
In 2008, HOPE Clinic became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-alike. This paved the way for the HOPE Clinic to receive HRSA's 330 Program grant and be recognized as an FQHC in 2012. Over time, HOPE Clinic expanded its services, including vision, dental, and behavioral health.
Today, HOPE Clinic has five locations around Greater Houston, including the newly built, comprehensive T.T. and W.F. Chao Foundation HOPE Health and Wellness Center (HHWC) in the Alief community. This new state-of-the-art building offers a full range of care, including case management, lab work, women's health and obstetrics, adult medicine, pediatric, behavioral health, and pharmacy. The fruition of HHCW offers quality health services to all regardless of one's ability to pay which further enhances HOPE Clinic's commitment to meeting the health and wellness needs of the community.
